Why the Contractor Isn’t the Designer

There’s a difference that gets overlooked all the time in outdoor projects: the difference between building and designing. Contractors build. That’s their job. They follow the plan, lay the materials, and get it installed.

The problem is that many outdoor projects skip the design part completely. People go straight into pricing, materials, and timelines and later start wondering why things feel a little off, why the patio feels too big, why the grill is too far from the kitchen door, and why the pergola blocks the exact view they want to enjoy. And it’s not that the contractor did anything wrong. They built what they were asked to build. The issue is that nobody ever slowed down and asked the right questions first. How will this space actually be used? How does it flow with the house? How does it connect to the way people really live?

Most people miss that part. Design isn’t about picking out products; it’s about planning how everything works together before the first shovel hits the ground. Even the best builder needs a solid plan. Without it, they’re still just building on guesswork.

Before any quote, material list, or timeline, ask yourself: was this really designed or just measured and estimated?
