The Space Between the Walls and the View
The Space Between the Walls and the View

One of the most overlooked parts of outdoor living design is space planning. I see it every week when I visit clients who are frustrated with their existing patios or struggling to figure out why their space doesn’t feel right.
Most of the time, the issue isn’t the furniture itself, it’s that the space was never designed for it. The layout doesn’t match the way people live. The furniture ends up forced into corners, floating in open space, or blocking the natural flow from one zone to another.
I see patios that could host a wedding, but feel empty and cold because they are oversized. And others so tight that you can’t walk around a table without bumping a chair. True design starts with understanding how the space will be lived in. Where does the morning coffee happen?
How does the family move from the kitchen to the dining area?
Where does the conversation continue when the fire is on and the night gets quiet?
When those answers guide the design, everything begins to fall into place. The furniture fits naturally. The proportions make sense. The kitchen, dining, and lounge zones all connect with comfort and purpose. Nothing wasted, nothing missing. That’s when an outdoor space stops being a project and becomes a lifestyle.
